In a typical session, Prof Natrajan prints out the weeks problems for us and solves them in class, step by step. A few lectures were cancelled last minute, slides were outdated and difficult to make sense of. Any interesting modules – e.g. We played the spaghetti marshmallow tower challenge in the first lesson. A typical sectional begins with a introduction to the week’s content by Prof Marleen, time to discuss the case with those near you and time to discuss the answers as a class (aka class part). So while waiting for my actual 9th sem to start, I thought this would be a good title for a post just jotting down my thoughts. No need to attend if you can do the tutorial problems. Assessment: 6 x 1000 word essays 10% each, participation 15%, 2 quizzes 7.5% each, forum posts 10%. The second lab, I brought a laptop and used excel for the calculations. The difficulty and workload ratings are subjective, but I still want these to be as consistent as possible. I’m not a good writer and reading my own writing gives me cancer (in one of my groupmate’s words oops). I highly doubt it was a pretty sound (almost a howling/ wailing for me). Showed us how to use SolidWorks (if I recall correctly). Preparation – Drink lots of water and eat something before starting. Class Format: Lecture (2 x 2h) This narrowed my choices down to Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. Review: Leaving. From when I decided not to pursue a H3 to being lazy to apply for summer school and to not taking an extra module in year 4. Prof Wu will then go through the theory on her slides and round up the discussion for the case. Unfortunately I’m not that great a student and struggled with this 8am throughout the semester. Travelling in Europe is full of variety and cheap. I suspect it cannot be more difficult since it’ll largely be with the same people who took the cores with me. The final exams were long 2.5h for 35MCQ, not many students stayed till the end. I don’t think liking the prof is a good reason for saying I enjoyed this module. The exam is open book so bring all the resources. The exam is regurgitation. It was held in an intimate setting in the classroom. Assessment: Class participation 20%, Individual assignments 20%, Final Test 30%, Group Project 30% We spent almost every Monday 4pm to 9pm in HSSML rushing this out. Anyway, it all depends on your objectives. The exam is practice based. Read a few books, finally get into videography (fix that camera first), learn some basic coding, take my ukulele out of my recycling bin (literally it is sitting there), lose some weight, gain some Masterchef worthy skills, maybe actually join a CCA and contribute. NUS Mechanical Engineering Modules are here! The Tuesday class which I attended for makeup was strangely quiet and tense. Review In selecting a project, definitely read the project description, check the project prerequisites, find out about the prof, verify if it’s a group project or continuation of previous semester’s. I expected an A+ but according to my friend, our lab probably dragged us down. Instead of having a single final exam like European schools, the grading is broken down into numerous small components which means you are constantly studying. Quirks include us having dementia, not remembering anything from the previous sem, be it dimensional analysis or year 1 engineering math. For group project we chose to come up with a new service operation and described the service processes in the report. I started this at the airport and stopped after the first review. Brief Description of Modules PC1141 Introduction to Classical Mechanics. To each his own I guess. Module Type: Core, MPE Upstairs I recharged (literally because I charged my phone) and sat for a while. Hence I appealed into MNO3333 – good decision!! I try to sleep but I guess the tea served by China Eastern was way too strong. Now comes the second part which contributes 90% to the problems with this module. I enjoyed the labs, one of which including having to reverse engineer the pump characteristics (I think). I lost motivation near recess week. NUS Mechanical Engineering and Business (Administration) Double Degree Program. We were 3 DDP engineers, 1 DDP FASS, and 1 life sci major doing a management minor. As mentioned earlier, part of the selection is how you rank your choices. I would highly recommend this mod because Prof Wu’s dedication and sincerity made the module very enjoyable. It does take quite a lot of time to write out answers to the tutorials in full. A part of it might be that that prof released slides after the class. Hey honestly would reccomend against a MacBook, get a Windows machine with a good dedicated GPU. This is the same for applying through Biz, except that students are limited to business school modules. Module Type: Core, preallocated To me, some concepts of human behaviour may seem obvious but the research required to proof and justify it definitely isn’t. I missed most of the lectures which were not webcasted. For Midterm, 4 scenarios were given and we had time to write out a script. Workload: 3/5 I had a kind, caring teacher and a playful class. This is a must clear when business students go for exchange. We were given around 2.5 hours and a 1500 word limit for this. Nonetheless, her notes are good, teaching style is clear and concise and her stamina to do 3 back to back classes in a day is admirable (Is this the trend for all the good professors). I somehow ended up having to pick between attending the tutorial for this module and the tutorial for the other. Review: I scored a mix of 2-4 marks and averaged out at 3. (Mechanical Engineering) programme are required to satisfy the following requirements to graduate from the course: Complete a minimum of 160 MCs with a CAP ≥ 2.0. Review: The quiz is a 1hr MCQ, 15qn per part. I knew I didn’t get most of the exam right, but I still did not expect to do this badly (even worse than the MNO1001 which I took with the plans of SU-ing). I finally get to take TE in NUS and experience what that is like. Foundation Physics Module for Mechanical Engineering Students. You will even find the slides familiar because they are made in the same style. They do not grade on a curve but the threshold for a passing grade is high. The students with the highest CAP (up to the vacancies available) are selected. Group projects are fun when the groupmates (not chosen by you) are responsible and can be nightmares when your project depend onMIA members’ work. Eating out is usually not cheap, but fresh produce are cheaper so cook your own meals. Bring the tutorial solutions as exam questions tend to be repetitive. However you will find that schools overseas do not do such long hours. Those in HK can visit places in China (shenzhen, shanghai, jiuzaigou etc) and fly home often if they so wish. The tutorial would spill out into the corridor as students can’t even find space to stand. Each week, there was a theme for discussion. Its good to have a summary of the notes in PDF that you can CTRL-F. Was it just for one or two modules across semesters or was it widely used and should always be readily available. The week’s essay will be due 2 weeks later (ie. Lecturer is lecturing at the next level, need to consult lecturer (sometimes consultation also hopeless). Class Format: Sectional (3h) Chanting helped to take my attention off my muscles. The new prof seemed terribly lost and I decided it would be a struggle to sit through that class. While my friends spent their quota doing mainly thematic summaries, I discovered that I was bad at it and abandoned it after 2 essays. The temple was brightly lit, cars filled the roads along the temple, people were streaming in and out of the temple. The lecture notes are sufficient even without the audio webcast. This should have given me a good opportunity to clarify concepts but I found that tutors had difficulty addressing our questions. Professor:  Adjunct lecturer Winston Low Long post. We attended Prof Teo’s tutorials as all the other tutors were hopeless. The NUS Computer Engineering programme is holistic and comprehensive. Class Format: Lecture (2 x 2h) *(See the module review coming in the near future). Tutorials were discussed briefly in class, but I never did them so I never listened. Prof cheekily told us the qualitative questions are there because those who can calculate can’t write and vice versa so it makes a good differentiator lol. 7qns for the e-learning were done online. ), analyse the issue and come up with recommendations. Prof Natrajan is engineering trained, probably resulted in this module being largely quantitative. Assessment: Class participation 30%, Mid-term group assignment 10%, Group project 30%, Test 30% BTech (… Assessment: A mystery. This is what I meant by the knowledge learnt was partially used. It might be good to play up what you look forward to learning while on exchange. For each part there are group assignments and group project. Candidates with other qualifications and achievements deemed to be suitably prepared … Difficulty: 4/5 If you still don’t get allocated, there is the option of applying outside of NUS and taking LOA to go. I liked that the exchange students asked about every little thing because there were parts I didn’t understand either and their question helped clarify these. Again the key to such reflections isn’t reflection at all but a test to see how you can apply as many concepts as possible. Attend classes and do some preparation for tutorials. MEBiz DDP NUS Mechanical Engineering and Business (Administration) Double Degree Program. Some of these modules are offered specially to exchange students to introduce the local culture. There are no case questions to prepare, so just come for class having read and (ideally) committed to memory the important aspects of the case. However, despite all the negative reviews I’ve heard about this module – from how its all fluff and the project is a nightmare, I did not experience any of that at all. Part 1 (Prof Goh) is general purchasing knowledge, what is the purchasing function,  Kraljic purchasing matrix etc. Usually a department representative would be invited down as well (Prof Quan the SEP coordinator came down for ours). Prof Tan’s tutorials were v useful. Difficulty: 4/5 The lecturers did their part to prepare and present the content but were definitely not on prof shim/ tan/ teo’s level. Many groups headed in the same direction so standing out was difficult. The new MBPs unfortunately don’t come in 15 inch anymore but the 16 inch’s specs seems a bit of an overkill for school and too big to lug around everyday. Rumour has it that its more of 90% CAP and how you rank your choices. The tutorials are conducted in a similar style as ME2113. The exam is closed book, no cheatsheet allowed but a formula list is given. Lecture bordering on being cryptic, need to reread/ rewatch webcast to understand. This is Prof Yang’s first time teaching and she seemed to struggle with how to best acknowledge lousy class parts. Hence most of my answer is based on my experience in NTU. Perhaps because a lot of time was spent on the case, I ended up in week 6 wondering if we actually learned any concrete content. He explains clearly and makes jokes. The sessions felt rushed because of the amount of content on the slides – ~60 slides per week. As I see it, we guided ourselves through the project to come up with a feasible business plan, executive summary, pitch and sensible financials. I told her that all I know was that devotes would walk one round around KMS’s compound taking 1 bow (kneeling with forehead to the ground) for every 3 steps. Evidently I have learnt nothing much from our toughest 2nd year. Both professors have been teaching this module for a while and are very experienced. My friends and I would cut lunch short to camp outside the tutorial room so we could rush in to chope seats. Preclusions Mechanical Engineering students Cross-listing. The Bizad application process is a monster requiring approvals left right center and I admit to knowing next to nothing about it. The problems got worse for the final project for which we did not start on until the last 10 days and had to stay back in school until 12am to work on together as a “group”. Mechanical Engineering takes advantage of other engineering disciplines, blending Materials Science, Electronics and Software Engineering with the core subjects. Our lab tutor was very strict on submission time, he did an above average job explaining the lab but refused to spoon feed us the answer for the lab questions (much unlike other labs, I realised I have not described a typical ME lab). This is a typical ME core module, the only assessments are the 2 labs and final exam. In the end, I spent 2.5 whole day and nights working on it, including through ME2114 lecture. Prof Natrajan is clear, lessons are very structured and ran like clockwork. Some do 4 modules at once while others to 2 for each half semester. Reunited! I am unlikely to be a HR professional but the prof tries to angle some of the content to the individual as well, so there will be something to takeaway for everyone. The test is a short 1 hour so write  briskly, apply concepts and give examples. We printed out our answers and just stuck them to the A1 paper provided. This semester, I took MNO1001 which I planned to S/U from the start and this reduced my workload. However, I got lots of bad feels just from walking into the class. There were lots of vectors, centripetal and angular acceleration, reference and body axes. Exchange can still the time to gain knowledge from the most prestigious universities in the world, just be prepared to work hard. If the workload hours are insufficient, you have to take 2 modules abroad to map back to 1 here. We formed our own groups, which are the same for the presentation and project. Most students should be scoring similary for class part and tutorial presentation so the differentiating factors are the midterm and final exams. I slept while waiting for public transport to start operating at daybreak. Don’t bother trying to stuffing in as much concept as possible or fluffing your way around, prof yang can smell it out. Every team dressed up and/ or prepared a skit. Both profs are very experience but the classes can be quite dry because of the proving. The interim presentation is in week 1 or 2 of sem 2 so you must have something to show. Most of the volunteers were even aunties and uncles, who stayed up overnight when even a millennial like me couldn’t. CONDUCT: Lectures: 3 hours per week, every week. I start the sem being all gung-ho about my FYP, thrilled to take TEs with friends and finally clear off the Biz Cores. I got an excuse to read in the busy semester and got marks for it, score! The vibration question was a tutorial question, so good job to all those who brough the tutorial solution in. While some started writing papers here, some didn’t even do anything and only started panicking in December when they realised they actually needed to present something for the interim in January. I went out of my way to find out which class professor Ravi was teaching so I could join his class. Fourth year really did feel like graduation year. Then theres the results processing, report writing and presentation. Many also cleared this easily on exchange/ summer (hanyang). We got so lost discussing and went in circles until the time shortage forced us to settle on a stand. Looking back, it should not have been that hard. From managing the queue to pouring drinks, handing out snacks, directing traffic, being on standby to watch the wellbeing of the devotees, every role was performed with professionalism. There are next to no guidelines for the project which is great for this, we had fun imagining what our business would be like. Firstly bootcamp isn't guaranteed to work and one of my friends actually messed up her hard drive lol. Depending on which school you go, it might be extremely easy or difficult to clear the TE. Oh and European countries are very big on being cashless. Assessment: Final and small group design project The lectures were ineffective partially due to the standard of teaching, partially because I was lagging behind by several lectures and could not catch up, partially becuase I could not catch up to the lecturer’s pace and needed more time to understand the content, and partially becuase it was held from 4-6pm. But its still an interesting module, I also wanted to write on my experience with CSWA as well as the procedure and difficulties in applying for exchange. German schools usually require basic German proficiency as you may have to take modules in German. Prof Teo is a very engaging lecturer who knows the quirks of students. This is to prevent cheating. Each year’s exams questions are unique so no point doing 10 years of it. Professor: Prof Ravi. My groupmates and I all spent too much time on one question calculating the length of a runway. Travelling around the continent is convenient as well. Go experience KMS overnight on vesak eve, test your resolve on the 3S1B. So I guess I scored a somewhat win by having a well organized paper with clear headings and direction markers. These were interesting and don’t be surprised, the content was tested for us. EG2401 Engineering Professionalism – also a “fluff” mod. The same 4 essay questions for the individual assignment were in the list but rephrased. Sounds dubious for a world class education, but this is the part that’s truly teaching us life skills – how to hustle for what you want. Groups of 3 are randomly assigned. This only serves to reveal my own ignorance and months later I will be back to laugh at myself and my misconceptions. It was getting crowded once again, people packed me left and right, making it hard to move. We all saw the deadline coming but we just decided that we were going to procrastinate on everything until the very last minute, when we finish our projects and have just 1 week to write everything. I did get lost during the lecture but managed to catch up by reading the lecture notes. So much to do and I hope I will be able to. Professor: Prof Usa. I though I’d understood all the content but the finals prooved me wrong. Don’t let the use of the metric system put you off from US universities.
